Holy crap, there are a lot of PDA models out there...
Considering an upgrade, but feeling overwhelmed by the choices. Any recommendations or warnings?
...It'll probably be a while before I actually do it and can afford it, but I am thinking of upgrading my old Palm Vx.

-- I know you can link between to-do lists and the address book.
-- Actual handwriting recognition, that learns your writing as you use it.
-- Easy to use with MP3s and camera plug-ins, with no extra software.
Ummm... Let me get M into this conversation, since he's the one who got me started...

-- Linking todos and addresses is a good example of a nifty feature that I'd probably never use.
-- I kinda like Graffitti, and I'd rather just pick up a system and use it than have a spend a couple of weeks training it - and I'd like to be able to let others use it occasionally, too. Plus some of them come with thumbboards these days...
-- And a lot of the new Palm models actually come with cameras and MP3 players, so that's not even a big factor.
So you see what I mean?

If it had breasts, I'd sleep with it. :)
No seriously, this thing kicks major ass! It can play MP3's. If you buy a stereo headset you can listen to them in stereo. I can play streaming MP3's (Shoutcast) live from the Internet! It can take pics (crappy pics, but pics all the same), record movies and record sound files. It plays kick-ass polyphonic midi ringtones. The 5-way controller is really slick, and frankly the keyboard is a lot faster for many things than Grafitti. Like, I can be walking around at working punching in asset tags of PC's i'm planning to nuke, er, upgrade.
OTOH, it's bloody expensive, and some features are useless unless you pay for the cellphone service. I'd actually recommend NOT buying a Treo 600 right now, as there are strong rumors of a new model coming out soon. The single biggest disappointment about the Treo 600 is it only has a 160x160 resolution display. THere's a lot of games and other programs out there designed just for hi-res displays.
I will recommend you get a PalmOS 5 device. They are all ARM processors and much more powerful. Any of the Tungeten line, for example. Stuff you can run on a PalmOS 5 device with a hi-res display includes:
o C-64 emulator
o Atari ST emulator
o Actual Arcade game emulator! Play emulated pacman on your palm!
o Lots of kick-ass games
You will find some apps don't work on PalmOS 5, but it's not a huge list. A lot of folks have updated their software to be compatible, and in most other cases there's a replacement program available that is either Native PalmOS 5 or at least runs under PalmOS 5. You will have to give-up hacks though. While PalmOS 5 apps can modify the system behavior, the actual hackmaster method is totally broken so all those old hacks are pretty much useless, :(
If you've been happy with a Palm Vx in general, I'd say look at a Tungsten E. It'll blow your socks off but is relatively cheap.
Oh, and if you buy a wireless SDIO card and pop it in the PDA, you can get wireless Internet access. :)

...And the idea of an updated model just makes me tingly all over, especially since it will be a while before I'll be able to do anything about it...
Interesting that you'd mention the Tungsten E. I've got to admit that from what I've looked at, the Tungstens just don't look that interesting compared to the Zire and Treo, other than the price.
