This time, we did it to ourselves

You may think it's hyperbole, but this morning listening to the radio, I honestly got the same feeling I got on the morning of 9/11 watching the towers burn: gnawing fear, helplessness, and utter terror for the future of our country and the world.

And the worst damn part is that, barring any last minute surprises or evidence that the voting machines were tampered with (NOT THAT WE'LL EVER FUCKING KNOW), We The People did it this time. Before today, I could always say, "No, Bush is not the real President. He was never really elected. He's just an imposter, and I can't wait until this country gets its act together and votes his ass out." I can't say that anymore. He's really (with provisos) the President now. I guess I have to respect that. But nothing will ever make me happy about it.

I'm so disappointed in my fellow citizens right now... Exit polls indicated that a lot of people ranked moral values as the most important factor in this election, and that those who did rank them high tended to support Bush. Have we been fooled that much? Has the Big Lie actually worked? The man has the morals of a snake (and I'm referring to the one who helped teach us the difference between good and evil), and yet people actually felt he was the right moral choice? *sigh*

One thing I heard here and there was that a lot of people voted for Bush, because, despite everything that's gone wrong, they're afraid of what will happen, or would have happened without him, or with someone else. Ya know, I've heard that kind of sentiment before. From battered spouses. We have become the Battered Electorate.

I hope to G-d that I'm wrong. You'll forgive me if I don't think that I am.

And I didn't even get laid this morning...
