There's nothing quite like watching a small animal die to ruin your morning...

Driving to work, like any other Monday morning. I noticed a few hundred yards ahead a little black shape trying to dart across Ives Dairy road. Jumping, swerving, zig-zagging. And most of the cars stopped or swerved away from it too.

Most.

Poor goddamn thing almost made it. Eight lanes of traffic, and he crossed seven successfully.

It was a little black kitten. He stopped suddenly in front of an SUV (#include "Fucking_SUV_drivers_rant.h") only two or three cars ahead of me - traffic was light, so it was about 50-100 feet. I instinctively reacted and swerved around him, but once I was close, I saw that he was still moving. I almost kept going, but I knew that I wouldn't be able to forgive myself if I didn't do something. So I turned around and went back. I don't know if he got hit again, but he had stopped moving by the time I got back, only a few moments later. I bundled him up into my towel anyway, put him in the passenger seat and took him to our regular vet. I figured that if nothing else, they could put him down humanely.

He was gone by the time I got there. I offered to pay for the disposal, but the vet told me not to worry about it. They're expensive, but they're good people.

Luckily, L works around the corner, so I was able to stop by and tell her what happened and get a very much needed hug.

I'm really looking forward to getting home tonight, laying down on the couch, and getting mugged by some kitties....

Been in a fight with both. I would much rather be in a fight with a dog. Dogs have bigger teeth and cause more surface puncture wounds. Generally you only have to worry about the mouth. Cats have four claws and a mouth full of very pointy teeth. Dogs spit also has anti-bacterial qualities to it, cats don't. Try and over power a cat, you won't be able too. They can claw, bite, and wiggle their way out of everything. Standard-operating-procedure around my house is to towel them and bag them as quickly as possible. If you screw up the first time, you won't get them the second time and it might take hours to days to get them to the vet or in the kennel for whatever reason. Cats are also smarter, okay, except for Venus and Killian.
