With all the stuff going on with the job, I haven't been bitching about my class. Which is a little ironic, since I had my first exam on Tuesday. Being worried about getting there on time, I left the house at about 4:15. It took me 45 minutes to get to campus. With class at 6:25, this left me a little time to think.

If I leave the office at 5, I may or may not get to class by 6:25.

If I leave the office at 5, I tend to get home at 5:40-5:45. If I leave home at 4:15, I get to class at 5.

So, what happens if I leave the house at 5:40?

If it also takes 45 minutes (and it might, since I'll be going against traffic), then I will probably leave work at 5, go several miles north towards home, before going back south, past work, to campus.

I love Miami traffic.

...Off to make a little science.

Huh. I'm reminded of a Stephen King story and of the Mage RPG from White Wolf. Huh.

Well, the reasons would take far to long to explain. ;-)

I will sum up.

Stephen King: He wrote a story about a person that was so obsessed with minimizing the driving distance when going places that he ended up finding 'dark and shadowy' paths that got him there faster than reality would allow. The trade off is that he started getting younger and younger, probably inevitably.

Mage: Creating fireballs and lightning bolts out of your hands as a modern-day mage is frowned upon by reality. Reality fights back with "Paradox", the collective unbelief in magic causes you pain when you do 'vulgar' magic. You shoot a lightning bolt out of your hand and reality breaks your arm to compensate. So you do your spells in 'coincidental' ways. Instead of a lightning bolt you cause a nearby transformer to overload at just the right time.
So to cast a spell that will guarantee a safe/quick/whatever trip, you must go very much out of your way. Or something.

I didn't say it would make sense. My mind is twisty and confusing.

I was looking around as we were driving around LA and I was struck by the image of a mech (ala Robotech Veritech Fighter in human mode) standing at a traffic light, waiting for the light to change. Then it scratches it's ass.
